Woman killed at Lexington County home was ex-wife of shooter, 8-year-old son was in the house, too, says sheriff at press conference

The woman killed during a Lexington County home invasion after 1:36 a.m., Wednesday was the ex-wife of the man who shot her, according to Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon. He and Lexington Police Chief Terrence Green held a press conference around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday to give more details of the overnight incident that result in two fatalities.

Wednesday morning press conference

Koon said the couple, who had an eight-year-old son together, who was in the house at the time of the shooting, had divorced in 2022. It happened on Prismatic Way in the Rocky Springs subdivision near Rocky Creek Elementary School.

After shooting his ex-wife, the shooter shot a Lexington County deputy who was responding to the incident. The deputy heard a gunshot upon his arrival, said Koon. The deputy is scheduled for surgery Wednesday morning and is expected to live.

After shooting the deputy the suspect stole a car from the residence, driving through a garage door. He led several responding law enforcement units on a car chase for miles on Calks Ferry Road, firing at police cars as he fled. The SC Highway Patrol deployed a tire-deflection device and the suspect was stopped. He jumped out of the vehicle with his gun blazing, said Koon, and was then shot by law enforcement officers. SLED is investigating the incident, as is common is an officer-involved-shooting.

Koon said the eight-year-old told victim assistance officers to call his granddad when asked who to call.
Koon and Lexington Police Chief Terrence Green asked for prayers for the community in reference to the shootings.

Koon said officers had been called to the residence before for complaints of harassment. The shooter had a minor criminal record for charges in Florida, Koon said, but the charges were not violence-related.
