Woman and 23-month-old son identified as the victims in fatal I-26 crash in Lexington County

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the individuals who died in a multi-vehicle accident near the 90 mile marker of I-26 westbound in the Chapin area of Lexington County at approximately 2:45 A.M. on Thursday.

According to Fisher, Mrs. LaRhonda Davis Gibson, 47, and 23-month-old Ketron Menteze Gibson Jr. (the son of Mrs. Gibson) of Newberry were traveling westbound on I-26 when Mrs. Gibson and a tractor trailer slowed down for traffic. A pickup struck the rear of Mrs. Gibson’s vehicle causing her to hit the rear of the tractor trailer.

Both Mrs. Gibson and Mr. Gibson Jr. were pronounced dead on scene due to the injuries sustained in the accident. The occupant of the tractor trailer was not injured and remained on scene.

The pickup had two occupants who were transported to an area hospital with injuries.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol, SCHP MAIT, and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the incident.
