West Columbia’s Meeting Street Music Fest is Sept. 16, businesses looking forward to it

The Meeting Street Music Fest is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 16, on Meeting Street, in West Columbia. It’s FREE. Free parking and a trolley service will be provided, too.

Hosted by the City of West Columbia, It’s a celebration of music, featuring six bands, food, beverages, and a representation of West Columbia’s community spirit.

Where did the idea for the Meeting Street Music Fest come from?

Chaye Alexander is the owner of Chayze Lounge at 607 Meeting Street.  She features some of the best singers and musicians at her club on a weekly basis. “The shows sell out,” Chaye said. For a long time, Chaye thought it would be “cool” to bring bands to the front door of all the Meeting Street businesses. She is on the City of West Columbia committee that is planning the Meeting Street Music Fest.

“Music brings people together,” Chaye said. “I wanted to bring that to West Columbia.

Another West Columbia venue that attracts top talent from up and down the East Coast, is Bill’s Music Shop and Pickin’ Parlor. It’s at 710 Meeting Street. Bill’s will be in the middle of the Meeting Street Music Fest celebration.

“We’ll have classic country music on the evening of the Music Fest,” said Willie Wells, owner of Bill’s  Pickin’ Parlor. “We have dancing every Saturday night on our 1,200-sq-ft. dance floor.”

Wells also said he hopes the crowd coming to the Meeting Street Music Fest from other locales will come in and see his music hall for the first time will make it a point to come back and visit.

Music-oriented businesses are not the only ones planning for the Meeting Street Music Fest.

George Grogan, co-owner of Always Original Bakery, is highly anticipating the event.

“The city will close Meeting Street at 10 a.m. to set up the stages and allow the vendors to get in place,” George said. “We will have special hours that day. We will open at 2 p.m. and close after the last band finishes at 8 p.m. We are excited that one of the two music stages will be right outside our front door.”

Always Original Bakery is making special treats just for the Meeting Street Music Fest.

“Our focus for the day will be on bite-sized treats that the festival-goers can easily consume during the concerts,” George said. “We are also creating a specialty cookie especially for the Meeting Street Music Fest. It is a large, hand-decorated cookie of Treble, The River Maestro – with the river and bridge in the background.”

Always Original Bakery is taking pre-orders for that cookie and we will also be selling them on the day of the festival for as long as our supply lasts.

The excitement is building. The Meeting Street Music Fest is a CAN’T MISS event. So make plans now to be there.
