West Columbia’s Lakeview School placed on the National Register of Historic Places
West Columbia’s Lakeview School has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Elected officials, alumni, and members of the community gathered for a dedication ceremony of the school on Friday.
Sen. Nikki Setzler, West Columbia Mayor Tem Miles, West Columbia City Councilman Mickey Pringle and US Rep. James Clyburn were on hand for the event. Rev. Charles Jackson of Brookland Baptist Church was also in attendance with his wife, Robin.
Lakeview School – established in 1925 – was once an all Black school. It was used as a school until 1969. The facility now houses the Brookland-Lakeview Empowerment Center.
“It was an honor to be a part of the Dedication Ceremony for the National Register of Historic Places for the Site of Lakeview School,” said Setzler. He also said: “The Brookland – Lakeview Empowerment Center is doing tremendous work at the Center for the citizens of our community.”
An interactive virtual museum chronicling Lakeview’s history is being put together inside of the Empowerment Center.
