If you have been to the West Columbia Riverwalk recently, you may have seen some dirt being moved at the Amphitheater. About a month ago crews begin work on a plan to renovate the space.
West Columbia City Council has approved the addition of a concrete surface for the Amphitheater, and the seating area adjacent to the stage area.
Right now, the sand and gravel, that is currently in place at the amphitheater the seating area/stairs, is being removed. It will be replaced with concrete.
Jamie Hook, the city’s public works director, said concrete would fare better in the event of the rising of the Congaree River. Concrete will take less time to dry out and it will better sustain flooding, and result in less damage.
