West Columbia restaurant owner charged with tax offenses
A West Columbia restaurant that usually has lines waiting to get in, was closed Friday. And there is a reason.
Jeremy Chavis, the owner of Jackson’s Southern Kitchen on Sunset Boulevard in West Columbia, has been charged with four counts of tax evasion. He was arrested Friday, according to a S.C Department of Revenue release.
The accusation is related to sales tax returns from May of 2014 to December of 2017. The DOR release said the restaurant under-reported its gross sales on sales tax returns.
“By failing to report at least $2.7 million in sales, the defendant evaded paying $213,000 in sales tax due to the State of South Carolina,” the DOR said.
Jackson’s is well known in the community for its family food. People in the area say it’s not uncommon to see long lines at the restaurant. It previously had a location at the Richland Mall in Forest Acres, but moved to its current locations a few years ago.
Chavis was booked at the Lexington County Detention Center.
