West Columbia Police Officers Foundation thanks Zesto and Hilton Garden Inn for help during active shooter incident in January that closed Sunset Boulevard

On Jan. 17, a gunman held police officers at bay from the fifth story of the Hilton Garden Inn in West Columbia.

After a six-hour stand-off that resulted in the closing down of Sunset Boulevard and many other restaurants and businesses in the area, the gunman was taken into custody with no one being killed.

“Our officers were shot at, spit on and cussed at,” said West Columbia Police Chief Marion Boyce. He then thanked Pollianna Beerman, Hilton Garden Inn general manager for quickly responding to the threat and getting everyone off the floor where the gunman had barricaded himself.

Beerman expressed her thanks for the quick response and professional handling of the dangerous situation. She also gave the West Columbia Police Officers Foundation a $500 gift and pledged to host the West Columbia Police Department’s Christmas party at the hotel.

Greater Cayce-West Columbia Chamber President Tim James, acting as a member of the West Columbia Police Officers Foundation, said the cooperation of the Hilton Garden Inn was a key part in the successful ending of the stressful ordeal.

As the event lasted into the night, Pete Manos of Zesto brought food for the large contingent of law enforcement personnel at the scene.

“Pete didn’t have to be asked,” said James. He fed everyone and it was a big help when we needed it.
Manos said he was glad he could be of assistance.

James said: “The sole mission of the West Columbia Police Officers Foundation is to “Serve those who protect us. And when we see businesses standing out to serve the officers, we want to say Thank You. We are so honored in this community to have fine businesses who love law enforcement.”
