West Columbia Mayor, volunteers looking forward to City Wide, Litter Clean Up on April 29 – Still time to sign up – WCBF Plant sale same day

It’s a big day that many West Columbia residents look forward to. West Columbia’s City Wide Litter Pick-up Day is Saturday April 29. It’s part of an effort by the City of West Columbia and the West Columbia Beautification Foundation to beautify West Columbia. Click here to sign up

On that day, city officials, staff, families, community volunteers from church groups, scout troops, businesses, elementary schools, and others will disperse to different areas of the city to pick-up litter.

The litter pick-up is from 9 a.m. until 12 noon. Participants will meet at the West Columbia City Hall. On that same Saturday, and with Mother’s Day in mind, the West Columbia Beautification Foundation will hold a plant sale. It’s also at City Hall from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m.

Baskets are one for $25 or two for $45. Bedding flats are $25 each. Purchases are tax deductible.

West Columbia Mayor Tem Miles is a regular participant in the city-wide litter pick-up day. He’ll be there on April 29, as a volunteer, picking up litter.

“I encourage everyone to come out to help clean up our city,” Miles said. “It’s a great day for community fellowship. “It’s a wonderful event and we’d love to have you with us.”

Wes Lawson, Kyndel and kids are participating

In addition to the mayor, residents are looking forward to the city-wide litter pick-up.

West Columbia resident Wes Lawson has signed up to volunteer. And he is bringing some help.

“This is our second time as a volunteer for the West Columbia City Wide Litter Clean Up,” Lawson said.

“The first time was just me and my two youngest kids, two years ago. This time around we will also have my oldest child as well as my girlfriend, Kyndel, joining us.”

Lawson explained why he is a part of the clean-up day.

“We are participating because it is important to me how our community presents itself to visitors and locals,” he said. It is very disappointing when you drive in our community and see trash in the green spaces and in the gutters. I also want to teach my kids the importance of not littering. Seeing first hand how bad that problem is will hopefully make them more aware of their actions and encourage them to hold their friends accountable in the future.”

Lawson also said his children are eager to help in the litter pick-up.

“After doing the event two years ago, my kids have asked numerous times when we were doing it again,” he said. “Surprising as it may sound, they really enjoyed themselves and are looking forward to doing it again. It is a great opportunity to give back and to spend time with them and my girlfriend.”

Daniel Scurry is also a volunteer. So are his wife, Karen, and son, Talmadge. Talmadge is a seventh-grader at Gray Collegiate Academy, where he is in the Beta Club. The city-wide litter pick-up will serve as Talmadge’s Beta Club community service requirement.

“We’re looking forward to getting out to help clean up West Columbia,” Scurry said. “We love to pick up litter.” He also said it’s good to teach his son to clean up litter when he sees it.

Community fellowship and making your city look better. It’s great to get outside in the spring weather, too. There are so many good reasons to sign up to be a volunteer for the West Columbia City Wide Litter Pick Up Day from 9 a.m. until noon at City Hall on April 29.
