West Columbia man accused in fatal roadside shootout is in custody
A West Columbia man accused of fatally shooting a man during a roadside shootout Thursday night is in custody.
Cleveland Stone Jr., 21, faces multiple charges including murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to investigators.
Michael Duane Funny, 66, died after being shot on Glenn Road about 8:30 Thursday night, according to Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher.
“Based on the evidence at the scene and information gathered during interviews, detectives have determined Stone shot Funny as he stood outside Funny’s car,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said. “Funny, as he sat inside his car, returned fire with rounds that hit Stone and a bystander. ”Stone and the bystander are still in the hospital receiving treatment for gunshot wounds, according to Koon.“
This was an isolated incident that started with Funny asking Stone a question about a family member after driving up and seeing Stone near a home,” Koon said. “Stone, who was armed with a pistol, began shooting after a brief conversation.” Stone will be formally charged and booked into the Lexington County Detention Center after doctors release him from the hospital.
