Tree-down-in-west-Columbia

West Columbia Fire Chief Chris Smith on The Weather Channel

West Columbia got some weather attention last week.

There was lots of hype ahead of Hurricane Florence’s assault on South Carolina. At one time predictions were that Lexington County could receive up-to 10 inches of rain. Thankfully the storm moved more northerly, and Lexington County got from 2-to-4 inches of rain.

Before the storm, West Columbia Fire Department Chief Chris Smith was asked to take a minute to speak with the The Weather Channel about the City’s preparations for ths storm. The Weather Channel’s Chris Bruin was at the West Columbia Riverwalk Park and Amphitheater to talk to Bruin.

Smith said city crews were busy before the storm getting all the trash picked up so it was not blown around.
We’re making sure our equipment is ready,” said Smith.

Downed tree.

As it turned out, West Columbia, and Lexington County, did not get as much water as was once forecast. But the city’s public works crews were working around the clock as needed to keep roads open for emergency vehicles.
There were some closed roads temporarily because of water. Public works also had to clear downed trees on some roads.
