West Columbia Fall Recycling Day a good time to clean house and engage with your community
If you need to clean the clutter from your home, there is good news.
The City of West Columbia is holding its Fall Recycling Day from 9 a.m. until noon, on Saturday, Oct 29, at West Columbia’s City Hall, 200 N. 12th Street.
Residents can bring the following to City Hall for proper recycling: Scrap Metal; Appliances, Bicycles; Metal Shelving or Chairs; and Aluminum Cans; Electronics; Batteries; TVs; Computers; Printers; Game Systems; and Microwaves; up to four gallons of Dry Paint; Tires; Paper (a shred truck will shred on site.)
Prescription drugs will also be collected in conjunction with the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. (No syringes or Liquids.)

“It’s a good chance to get rid of all the stuff you don’t want,” said West Columbia Mayor Tem Miles. “It’s not too soon to begin making room for Christmas.”
Jamie Hook, West Columbia Assistant City Administrator of Public Operations, said since the city started the Fall Recycling Day it has grown.
“A couple of years ago we had more than 400 vehicles come through with items to recycle or dispose of. It’s a popular event. People are glad for the chance to clean their house.”
Hook also said there are certain items that people bring, more than others.
“Disposing of electronics is a big hit,” he said. “TVs, computers and monitors, we get a lot of those.”
Hook said the electronics are taken to a company and the parts of the electronic devices are taken out and used again. He said there are metals, including copper and a tiny amount of gold that can be retrieved from the components that are given to the city for recycling.
The shredding of documents is another popular service offered during Fall Recycling Day.
“We have a truck on hand to take documents and they are shredded on-site,” Hook said. “We get a high volume of paper for shredding.”
Aside from electronics and documents, the city accepts scrap metal for recycling. The scrap metal collected is sold and the proceeds will be donated to the MUSC Children’s Health and SC Firefighters’ Burned Children’s Fund.
Fall Recycling Day also lessens the burden of the West Columbia Sanitation department. When residents bring their debris to city Hall, it means fewer trips for the city trucks in neighborhoods.
In addition to being a day to rid your home of unwanted items, the Fall Recycling Day has also become a chance to engage with other members of the community and the City of West Columbia workforce.
“There’s a lot of community spirit at the recycling site,” said Hook. “It’s a chance for fellowship and it’s good to see the people of our community interacting with the employees of the sanitation department. It has become a tradition that is not only good for the appearance of West Columbia, it helps bring us a little more together.”
So don’t miss this opportunity for a clean-up and community engagement.
