West Columbia Big Lots not on the list to close, according to article in Newsweek magazine – 3 South Carolina locations to close

UPDATED: The West Columbia Big Lots in the Woodberry Plaza, at 3230 Augusta Road (US 1) is not on the list to close according to a list of Big Lots stores to close, nationwide, published by Newsweek magazine.

Brothers Retail Partners bought the Big Lots name in December and are partnered with North Carolina-based Variety Wholesalers. Variety Wholesalers operates more than 400 retail stores under various banners, which include Roses, Roses Express, Maxway, Bill’s Dollar Stores, Super 10, Super Dollar, and Bargain Town. Big Lots could close for a short period and open back up as a Big Lots or another brand name under one of the Variety Wholesalers brand names.

Three Big Lots stores in South Carolina are on the list to close. Those stores are: 1016 Pine Log Rd., Aiken; 1841 J A Cochran Byp., Ste A, Chester; and 1937 Wilson Rd., Newberry. Click here to see the list.

The Big Lots chain filed for bankruptcy in September after suffering a sales drop of up-to $114.5 million in 2024. Big Lots was close 545 of 1,389 locations by January of 2025.

So far, 400 Big Lots stores have closed. But Big Lots entered a deal with Gordon Brothers Retail Partners in December to keep some stores open. Around 300 more stores are expected to close nationwide this year, including the three in South Carolina. Variety Wholesalers can acquire between 200 and 400 Big Lots stores instead of all 963 remaining stores being closed.
