West Columbia bakers offering pumpkin and Halloween-themed goodies to celebrate the season

It’s obvious the calendar has changed from summer to fall. In West Columbia, popular fall treats include baked goods that feature seasonal flavors like pumpkin, apples, and pecans that reflect local traditions and autumn harvests.

Breads and Such

Beth Crolley owns Breads and Such at 1220 C Avenue, West Columbia with former School District Two teachers Chris Moore, and Bobby Johnson. Since opening in the summer of 2022, the establishment has prospered and grown.

Breads and Such was named as the place for the “Best Ribs” by The State newspaper in September. It also won second place for “Best Chicken” and third place for “Best Catering.”

Beth said Breads and Such has evolved to offer more complete menu items, including shrimp and grits, BBQ brisket, a fish fry, and soup and salad is coming soon. But there are lots of baked goods available, too, especially with a fall theme.

“For fall, we have pumpkin bread, apple pies, a special pumpkin butterscotch sandwich cookie and pumpkin pound cake,” she said. “And we use all locally-grown ingredients in everything we make.”

Beth said Breads and Such will have chocolate chip cookies beginning next week, with black and orange M&Ms for a Halloween theme.

The Cake House-Casa del Pastel

The Cake House-Casa del Pastel is at 323 North 9th Street Unit B, West Columbia. Owner Debbie Resendiz said she has been extra busy with pumpkin-themed parties and showers in the season of Halloween.

“I’ve been very busy this fall season,” she said. “And Halloween is a fun time of the year. I always try to bake Halloween favorite treats. We sell them in Halloween bundles of treats.

What will you find at Cake House-Casa del Pastel?

The Jack Skellington sugar cookie, Frankenstein chocolate dipped rice treats, Mummy chocolate, dipped pretzel rods, and Jack-o-Lantern chocolate dipped Oreos.
There’s also pumpkin spice tres leches, pumpkin spice poundcake and pumpkin rolls.

JJ’s Place

JJ’s Place opened in July of 2025 at 557 Meeting St. in West Columbia. It’s owned by  Janice Caldwell  and Andrew Reiniger. There, you’ll find pastries, loaves of freshly baked breads, bagels, coffee, cookies, brownies and muffins. And there are lots of seasonal favorites, but you have to wait until fall is officially here.

We don’t start putting out fall recipes until the first day of fall,” Janice said. “People come and ask, but I tell them you have to wait until it’s fall, September 22nd. You have to wait.”

What do you get when you wait?

“We have savory pumpkin bread,” Janice said. “It’s beautiful and popular.”

Janice said there are other fall offerings at JJ’s Place, too.

“We have pumpkin-spiced scones and pumpkin muffins,” she said. “We also have a spiced apple muffin and we’ll have apple turnovers soon.”

If you like pecans, JJ’s Place has you covered with their apple cinnamon pecan blondie. All of the bakery’s items are made with local ingredients and JJ’s Place also has homemade apple butter.
