West Columbia’s 6th Annual Art on State is from 5:30-until-9:30 p.m. on Friday May 10.
Presented on State Street by the City of West Columbia, Art on State offers a beautiful view of the city skyline. It also features live music, food and drinks. Artists are on hand to paint murals in the street and there will be a special Night Edition of the Meeting Street Artisan Market. Art on State musical performers are: Lucky Pocket Band; Civil Remedy; and Liz Carter.
Businesses on State Street will have specials during Art on State. The Warehouse at 312 State St. is conducting a Vintage and Makers Market on the premises with 10 local artists. Well-known local artist Barbara Youngue will be featured and she will be on hand for the evening. The Warehouse will also have beer and wine, along and snacks, with free parking in their lot.
The Rhythm on the River Spring Concert Series -Presented by the Greater Cayce-West Columbia Chamber begins on May 18, at the West Columbia Riverwalk 109 Alexander Rd., West Columbia.
Going Commando will play on May 18, and there will be a food truck from Karen’s Kitchen and Catering.
Art on State and Rhythm on the River take place in the district represented by West Columbia City Councilman Joseph Dickey. He said he is glad West Columbia is a part of so many opportunities for its citizens.
‘Art on State is a chance for everyone to get together and have a good time,” he said. “”It’s like a family reunion. You get to see everyone and catch up with what’s going on in each other’s lives.”
Dickey also noted there is no charge for the events in West Columbia.
“Not every city has this many quality, community events that are free,” he said. “Rhythm on the River is a tradition and the music is great. I can’t wait to bring my family to Riverwalk for the Rhythm on the River concerts.”
City officials are not the only ones thrilled with the return of Art on State and Rhythm on the River.
Danny Higman is an assistant manager at Black Rooster on the corner of Alexander Road and Meeting Street. He said Rhythm on the River definitely brings more business to the Italian-style restaurant.
Greater Cayce-West Columbia Chamber President and CEO Tim James is excited about both events.
“Spring is such a great time of the year in the Greater CWC, said James. “And May is going to be great, especially if you like high quality, family events that will not cost you anything to be a part of. On May 10, Art on State returns to State Street in West Columbia. It is one of the most satisfying evenings of the year. So many friends come out and gather for great music, good food and beverages. To see the people of this community having such a good time while everything is turning green again, is great for morale.”
James also said he is anticipating a great season for the Rhythm on the River concert series.
“Rhythm on the River is not only a wonderful event, it has become a tradition that is closely associated with the Cayce-West Columbia Chamber and the City of West Columbia, because we both play a very strong role in making it happen” he said. “The Congaree River and West Columbia Riverwalk, in the shadow of the iconic Gervais Street Bridge, is one of our top scenic assets. To add great bands to that setting is a delightful way to spend your evening. I look forward to sitting in the amphitheater with the backdrop of the river flowing and the sun going down, while the music plays.”
There are some great opportunities to get out and enjoy spring in West Columbia. Don’t mist out!
