St. Patrick’s Day in West Columbia, get your shamrocks, green cupcakes and a celebration at Savage Craft Ale Works on Saturday
Sunday is St. Patrick’s Day. It was originally celebrated in Ireland with festivals in honor of St. Patrick, one of Ireland’s patron saints. The first March 17 celebration was in 1631. Irish immigrants eventually brought St. Patrick’s Day traditions to the United States and the day has become a celebration of Irish culture by everyone.
With the spirit of St. Patrick in mind, some West Columbia businesses will commemorate St. Patrick with the offering of greenery, confections and music.
Jarrett’s Jungle, at 1621 Sunset Blvd., just received a shipment of shamrocks in time for St. Patrick’s Day.
“We’re making up these cute little baskets with the shamrocks,” said Katie Lineberger of Jarrett’s Jungle. She said Jarrett’s Jungle tries to stock flora for all seasons and celebrations and their customers respond. “Since the shamrocks came in we’ve been selling them at a pretty good rate.”
Always Original Bakery at 501 Meeting St. wants you to get into the spirit for St. Patrick’s Day. For the occasion, the bakery is making green-tinted mini cupcakes with vanilla buttercream and a candy clover on top. Owner George Grogan said Always Original bakes in accordance with all holidays and seasonal occasions. But you better get your sweets early, because it’s first-come, first serve. And often supplies sell out. Always Original Bakery is open Tuesday – Saturday from 10-6, and Sunday from 12-5.
In addition to decorations and sweets, Savage Craft Ale Works at 430 Center St. – in West Columbia’s River District – will provide music, food and refreshments on Saturday (March 16) for its St. Patrick’s Day celebration.
“We are really looking forward to our St. Patrick’s Day celebration,” said Victoria Porter, the general manager of Savage Craft Ale Works. “We’re offering a venue for the community to come together in the spirit of Saint Patrick’s Day. The live music starts at 3 pm. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets.”
“The Saint Patrick’s Day celebration at Savage Craft this year features Celtic tunes, traditional Irish fare, and a wide selection of craft brews,” she said. “We want to offer an alternative to those seeking something different from the traditional scene.”
A variety of Irish comfort food will also be available on the Savage Craft menu. The brewery will bring back its annual Saint Paddy’s brews – “Wee Bit o’ Wit” and “Pints of Gold” – specially crafted for the occasion. And the bartender will make it green if you ask. Other specialty Irish beverages will be available, too.
Porter said the highlight of the day will be the live performances by authentic Celtic music bands. The Bograts and Steel City Rovers are scheduled to perform. The bands are known for their energetic stage shows and authentic renditions of traditional Irish tunes.
What’s more, admission to the festival is completely free, and ample parking is provided by the City of West Columbia. Those lots are located off of Meeting Street, making it easily accessible for parking. There will be a designated rideshare pick-up and drop-off location on Center Street to encourage responsible celebrations.
Families are welcome to join in on the fun in the Beer Garden where they can enjoy the festivities in a safe and festive environment. Additionally, for those over 21, the rooftop area will provide stunning views of the surrounding area, creating the perfect backdrop for raising a glass in celebration.
The St. Paddy’s Day Bash at Savage Craft Ale Works will run from 11:30 am to 11 pm. So don your green attire, and head down to Savage Craft for a day of music, food, and merriment. It’s an event not to be missed.
