South Carolina Election Commission Announces Timeline for Replacement of Republican U.S. Senate Candidate
Following the death of US Sen. Lindsey Graham, the Republican Party nominee for U.S. Senate in the 2026 General Election, a special filing period and special primary will be held to replace the party’s nominee in accordance with state election law.
The filing period for candidates will open at noon on Tuesday, July 21, and close at noon on Tuesday, July 28. A special primary will be held on Tuesday, August 11, with a runoff, if necessary, held on Tuesday, August 25. The nominee selected through this process will appear on the 2026 General Election ballot.
“South Carolina law establishes a clear process for filling a vacancy in a party nomination,” said Conway Belangia, SEC Executive Director. “Election officials are prepared to administer that process and will continue working with county election officials to provide voters with timely information throughout each step.”
