Retail space, a grocer and residential units, with a pool, are possibilities for Capitol Square redevelopment
The West Columbia City Council has seen a rendering of what the potential development of Capitol Square could look like. The rendering is included in West Columbia’s 2024 Updated Redevelopment Plan.
Capitol Square is owned by Baker Commercial Properties and there are plans to develop the site. The last tenant moved out in December and the property is completely vacant. Its lot used used for parking for River District patrons of Savage Craft Ale Works, D’s Wings, the West Columbia Meeting Street Artisan Market and many other River District businesses.
The rendering shows a site bounded by Sunset Boulevard, Meeting Street and the Klapman Boulevard buffer. The rendering also shows development stretching into Shull Street and Leaphart Street.
Possibilities for the project include retail space, a food market and residential units with a pool. According to the rendering, the former House of Raeford parking lot on Sunset Boulevard and the Egg Roll Station property would be included in the footprint of the development. There is not timeline for construction of the project to begin.
West Columbia Mayor Tem Miles said Baker has owned the property for almost 20 years and he appreciates the relationship the City of of West Columbia has with the commercial real estate owner and developer.
“Baker has been a great partner,” said Miles, “and they have been supportive of us. We’re excited about the potential development of the Capitol Square property.”
