Restaurateur Greg Leon’s death a suspected suicide, former employees devastated by Leon’s death, says friend

Greg Leon, a well-known restaurant operator, died Friday night at Prisma Health hospital.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections said his death is being investigated as a suspected suicide.
Leon’s friend and attorney Eric Bland said Leon was loved by his employees of the San Jose restaurants that he owned.

Bland wrote: “Almost … every single one of Greg’s employees came to the hospital to express their grief and support the family. Grown men who have worked for Greg for 25 years were on the floor, crying like babies,” he wrote on Twitter. “I have never seen such outpouring of love for one person.”

Leon was in prison. A week before his death, Leon was convicted after shooting and killing a man who was having an affair with Leon’s wife. He had been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

According to the SCDOC , Leon was found hanging in his cell at the Kirkland Correctional Institution in Columbia around 12:30 p.m., Friday. He was taken to the hospital. He died around 11:56 p.m., Friday.

On July 6, a Lexington County jury found him guilty of taking the life of Arturo Bravo Santos, 28, on Valentine’s Day of 2016. Santos and Leon’s wife were caught by Leon in the back seat of the truck Leon’s wife had allegedly bought for Santos.
