Rebecca Fannie Dawkins, 100, recognized by West Columbia City Council

One of West Columbia’s most-elderly residents turned 100 on Tuesday. It was the birthday of Rebecca Fannie Dawkins, on Feb. 7.

To commemorate her birth, and long life, Dawkins was recognized by the West Columbia City Council at its meeting Tuesday.

Councilman Boyd Jones, who represents the city council district in which Dawkins lives, presented a resolution to Dawkin’s sister, Henrietta Taylor, and niece, Doretha Herlong. Both are residents of North Brown Street in West Columbia. Click on copy of resolution (below) to read.

Ms Dawkins, born in 1917, went to New Brookland High School and Clinton Junior College. She obtained her cosmetology license from Pope Beauty School and operated a beauty salon is West Columbia for more than 40 years.   She has been an active member of Turner AME Church for more than 50 years.
