Rainbow Drive bridge over I-26 on schedule to open in October
Work to replace the bridge on Rainbow Drive over Interstate 26 in Springdale is progressing and the bridge should open in a couple of months.
Chris Drive and Harbor Drive, both north of Leaphart Road, and part of the Leaphart Road bridge over I-26 have been closed by the South Carolina Department of Transportation. But all of it should open in October, said Robert Power, an SCDOT resident construction engineer in West Columbia.
“October is the target for opening Rainbow as well as the remainder of the Leaphart bridge and Chris Drive and Harbor Drive. Wrap-up work will likely continue into November, but we anticipate both bridges opening in their final configuration by the end of October,” said Power.
Power also said there could be delays that are out of control of work crews that could put off the completion date.
He said “bad weather or other difficulties that are sometimes encountered in the final stages of the construction process, such as the scheduling and coordination of various specialty subcontractors.”
Currently traffic that would normally use the Rainbow Drive bridge is being detoured. The current detour includes SC 602 (Platt Springs Road) and S-32-71.
