The Lexington 2 School Board got some good news Thursday.

The cost for the new elementary school being built off of 12th street extension in Cayce is coming in at more than $2 million under budget.

The projected cost for the school was $31.8 million. Jenny Kirk, of Thompson Turner Construction, told the board the cost of the school would be $28. 5 million, and that’s adding more than $102,000 to the price for some stone work inside the school.

“It will add some character,” said Architect Todd Sease of the additional stone.

The board unanimously approved the expenditure for the school. A groundbreaking was held on April 18. And land-clearing has already begun at the site.

Sease said there were lots of local bidders to work on the school that will combine Davis and Taylor Elementary. “We’re thrilled with the numbers,” he said.

The school is a product of the $225 bond referendum for school  voters approved in November of 2014.
