A Block of Meeting Street could be named in honor of the late West Columbia businessman Joe Taylor. Taylor, who operated a development headquarters on State Street in West Columbia, was also a Columbia City Councilman. He was the force behind many projects that are part of West Columbia’s revitalization.
Meeting Street from State Street in West Columbia, across the Congaree River over the Gervais Street Bridge to Huger Street, would be named “Joe E. Taylor Jr. Way,” according to “The State” newspaper. It’s a state-owned road.
Columbia City Council had approved the naming of part of Washington Street in Columbia for Taylor, but that plan was met with opposition, according to Morgan Hughes, reporter for The State.
But now it seems state and local leaders have agreed on a plan to dedicate the stretch of the bridge and a block on both sides of the bridge in Taylor’s memory.
