Man who died in officer involved shooting Saturday is identified
Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon notified the public around 4:15 a.m. Saturday morning of an officer-involved shooting that occurred around 10:45 Friday night on Founders Road at Founders Boulevard in Lexington.
Ronald Scott Jenkins, 55, suffered a gunshot wound and died after being transported to a hospital, according to Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher.
Jenkins, a Lexington resident, fired at two deputies and a K9 police dog as they approached him, according to Koon. The deputies returned fire and struck him, Koon said.
“The deputies and the K9 were not injured,” Koon said. “We extend our condolences to the friends and family members of Mr. Jenkins.”
As is standard procedure, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is leading the investigation into the incident, according to Koon.
According to Koon, deputies responded in reference to a suicidal subject. “Prior to our deputies arriving on scene, we were informed that the subject had left the residence and the caller believed he heard a gunshot,” Koon said. “We deployed our K9 units and after a short track they located the suspect. As they approached, the suspect fired rounds toward the deputies. Our deputies returned fire, striking the suspect.”
Koon said EMS was called immediately and the male suspect was transported to a local hospital. Deputies and K9 officers were not harmed. SLED arrived on scene shortly after, as requested by the Sheriff’s Office to handle the officer-involved shooting portion of the investigation, according to Koon.
