Man who died after apprehension by Lexington County Sheriff’s Department is identified.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has released the identity of the man who went unresponsive
after he was apprehended by the Lexington County Sheriff Department during a warrant service on
shortly after 1:30 P.M. in Lexington County, Thursday.

Fisher stated that Mr. Bernice Junior Smith, III, 32, of Aiken, went unresponsive and was
transported by Lexington County Emergency Medical Services to a local hospital where he was
pronounced dead shortly after arrival. A deputy encountered Smith at a store in Red Bank.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, at the Medical University of Charleston.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating this incident along with the Lexington
County Coroner’s Office.
