Man is struck several times by vehicles and killed before someone stopped and called 911, Lexington County Coroner identifies
Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the person who died in a vehicle vs. pedestrian accident in the 900 block of Highway 178, three miles north of Pelion in Lexington County on Thursday at approximately 7:17 p.m.
According to Fisher, Mr. Robert W. Barrs, 74, of Pelion was walking across Highway 178 when he was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound on Highway 178.
Mr. Barrs was pronounced dead on the scene due to the injuries sustained in the collision. The driver did not stop and fled the scene. Video surveillance revealed thirty-four (34) other vehicles drove past Mr. Barrs with multiple vehicles hitting him before someone stopped and 911 was called at 7:36 P.M. Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the SC Highway Patrol, three vehicles hit the pedestrian.
The Lexington County Coroner’s Office, the South Carolina Highway Patrol, and the South Carolina
Highway Patrol MAIT continue to investigate the incident.
