Man found dead in hotel in August has been identified by the Lexington County Coroner

Update to the case of the unidentified male that was found in an abandoned room at the Motel 6 on Burning Tree Drive on August 14, shortly after 7 p.m. in Lexington County.

The male had been deceased in the motel room for approximately two to three weeks before being discovered by a passerby searching for a friend. The motel had been closed permanently since March 1. The motel has since been demolished.

The male found in the motel has been positively identified as Mr. Anthony Wayne McCullough, 49, of Columbia. Mr. McCullough was identified through DNA analysis after tips received from friends and a possible family member.

An autopsy was performed on August 16, and the final cause of death has been determined to be a multi-drug overdose to include methamphetamines and fentanyl. The manner of death is ruled accidental.

The Lexington County Coroner’s Office appreciates all of the tips and information received in this case which led to the positive identification of Mr. McCullough.
