The Cayce Police Department and Cayce Fire Department have made an arrest in the fire at Cayce Trinity Baptist Church that took place in the early morning hours of Feb. 24.

Lavoie

Tuesday, Paul Peter Lavoie, 53, was interviewed, placed under arrest and charged with second degree burglary and second degree arson. He was transported to the Lexington County Detention Center. Investigators and patrol officers diligently canvassed the community for information; following up on all leads and reviewing all evidence. Patrol officers located Lavoie and conducted a field contact with him Saturday night.

Lavoie confessed to breaking the glass to the church and setting the fire. The church and the interior of the church has suffered extensive damage and much if it must be replaced.

Cayce Fire Chief, Steven Bullard, and Cayce Police Chief, Chris Cowan, jointly stated, “We want to thank the tireless efforts of our investigators, and our state and federal partners with providing closure to this case. This would not have been possible without boots on the ground dedicating their time to bring the man responsible to justice. Arson cases can often be some of the most difficult to investigate and the commitment and professionalism of our team will hopefully bring closure to the church family.”

Trinity Baptist is grateful for the work of the Cayce Fire and Police Department. The Cayce Police and Fire Departments were assisted by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF.)
