Matthew Sanders Johns, 28, was arrested on multiple warrants after barricading himself in his residence in the 200 block of Coventry Drive, in Lexington. Lexington Police Chief Terrence Green announced around 2 a.m. Thursday that Johns had been arrested.

Tuesday morning Sanders ran away from an officer who attempted to stop him for speeding, according to a police report.  Later in the day, another officer saw Johns in the same vehicle.  He fled again and drove onto Sunset Boulevard, and an accident occurred near Mineral Springs Road. According to the report, Johns left the scene of the accident.

Officers then went to Johns’s residence Wednesday, where several people outside stated Johns was inside.  The LPD reported that officers attempted to call Johns out of the residence but he did not comply.  Officers established a perimeter, and brought in a Crisis Negotiations Team, and Emergency Services Team.

After failed attempts at crisis negotiation, police said the Emergency Services team fired chemical munitions into the house, and Johns contacted negotiators and told them he was coming outside. LPD reports he came out through a window in the garage and was taken into custody without incident.

Johns was evaluated by EMS then transported to the Lexington County Detention Center. He was charged with two counts of Failure to Stop for Blue Lights, Reckless Driving, Leaving the Scene of a Collision, and Driving Under Suspension Second Offense.
