Loaded gun found in the backpack of Airport High School student, Cayce Police make arrest
A loaded gun was found in the backpack of an Airport High School student, Monday.
Acting on a request from law enforcement regarding a weekend off-campus incident, administrators and the school’s SROs met a student as he arrived by bus before the start of classes to talk with him. The student was taken immediately to an office, and a subsequent search of the student’s backpack uncovered a loaded gun and ammunition. The student was taken into law enforcement custody. The student will face district discipline in accordance with board policy and state law.
The Cayce Police Department has arrested 18-year-old Treyvon Hampton for a weapons law violation. Hampton had a loaded gun in his bookbag when he got off of the bus this morning.
INCIDENT BACKGROUND: On August 20, a shooting and altercation occurred near the Town of Gaston in Lexington County. The County then made the notification to Cayce PD that some of the
students involved in the shooting were enrolled at Airport High School. Based on information received from the incident this weekend, school officials searched the bags of each and every student named
in the shooting and altercation that took place near Gaston.
When the a loaded handgun was found, Hampton was immediately arrested and taken to Lexington County Detention Center.
As an added precaution, the Cayce Police Department put additional officers at Airport High School.
Out of an abundance of caution, extra administrators and law enforcement officers are at Airport High School. The school day is operating on a normal schedule with the appropriate safety protocols in place.
