Lightning strike at Lake Murray Public Park sends several to the hospital

There was a lightning strike at the Lake Murray Public Park, Tuesday, near the dam. According to a detection monitoring system, the lightening strike occurred around 4:44 p.m. The strike resulted in 20 people (8 adults and 12 children) being hit. Reports stated that up-to 15 people were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Irmo Fire District posted: “The bolt of lightning that hit the water energized a metal cable with buoys on it that surrounds the swimming area. Several people had swam out to the buoys and were holding onto the cable when it hit, and others were nearby swimming. Everybody got quite a jolt”…

Also from the Irmo Fire District: Lightning can strike far away from a cloud. It doesn’t seem logical but a few hundred of us are believers today. It was bright and sunny at the lake, with clouds nearby but not overhead.
