Lexington Police issue citation in aftermath of fatal crash
The Lexington Police Department continues to investigate a collision that resulted in a fatality. The crash occurred Thursday, at the intersection of Augusta Road/US-1 and Morgan Drive. The LPD provided updated information on the crash via Lexington Police Chief Terrence Green.
At approximately 7:15 a.m., officers of the Lexington Police Department responded to a vehicle collision with injuries that had occurred near the 5100 block of Augusta Road at Morgan Drive.
Upon arrival to the scene, officers found four vehicles were involved in the collision and that one of the vehicle drivers was deceased. Two others involved in the collision were transported by EMS to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. All lanes of Augusta Road at Morgan Drive were immediately closed and detours initiated for the collision reconstruction investigation.
The victim of the fatal collision was identified by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office as Rusty Wayne Shull Jr., age 22 of Columbia, South Carolina.
The on-scene investigation found that Ted Ollie McGee Jr., age 79 of Lexington, South Carolina, was making a left turn from Morgan Drive onto Augusta Road when he failed to yield the right of way and striking the vehicle driven by Rusty Shull Jr. as he was traveling inbound on Augusta Road. This collision then caused two vehicles traveling outbound on Augusta Road to strike the vehicle of Rusty Shull Jr. as well.
Rusty Shull Jr. was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision and he was ejected from the vehicle.
Ted McGee Jr. has been issued a citation for Failure to Yield the Right of Way.
South Carolina Highway Patrol Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is assisting the Lexington Police Department Traffic Division in this collision investigation.
