LEXINGTON COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY MONITORING HURRICANE HERMINE AND INCLEMENT WEATHER CONDITIONS

The Lexington County Department of Public Safety, which includes the County’s Emergency Management Division, is closely monitoring Hurricane Hermine as it continues to develop in the Gulf Coast.

National Weather Service reports indicate that Hurricane Hermine will affect Lexington County. Lexington County Public Safety is asking residents also to monitor the storm and to plan ahead. The storm is predicted to bring gusts of wind up to 45 miles per hour, which could knock down power lines, trees and tree branches and cause damage to structures. Heavy rains generated from the storm could cause flooding in low-lying areas.

County officials have been in communication with all five Lexington County school districts and local municipalities to coordinate appropriate precautionary safety measures before the storm’s arrival in South Carolina.

Service and Emergency Medical Services are continuing normal operations throughout Thursday evening and Friday. They are ready to respond as necessary.

We urge that residents never drive, or walk, through flood waters. Remember that flooding can disrupt electricity and the drinking water supply. Flood waters can also carry hazardous materials that can endanger health, either upon contact with the water itself, or with the soggy debris left after potential flooding.

County officials advise that all residents stay tuned to the County’s website (lex-co.sc.gov), where up-to-date road closures will be posted. Officials also advise that residents monitor the County’s social media channels and local media for further weather information and advisories.
