Lexington County man killed after car he was riding in hits a tree, driver arrested on DUI charge
Lexington County Coroner, Margaret Fisher, has identified the individual who died in a single-vehicle collision in the 300 block of Calhoun Road in Swansea around 9 a.m., Saturday.
According to Fisher, Mr. Michael Nelvin Gordon, 40, of Gaston was the passenger
in the vehicle traveling westbound on Calhoun Road when the driver failed to navigate the
curve, leaving the right side of the road, and hitting a tree. Mr. Gordon, who was
wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, was pronounced dead at the scene due to the
injuries sustained in the collision.
The driver of the vehicle, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was transported to an area hospital where she were later released. The South Carolina Highway Patrol and MAIT continue to investigate the incident.
SC Highway Patrol Trooper David Jones said that the crash happened near Brookhaven Court. He said the vehicle involved was a 2014 Chevrolet Impala.
He also said the driver, Darlene Michelle Richardson, 40, was taken by helicopter to Prisma Health Richland Hospital.
Jones said Richardson was later arrested on a felony DUI charge of driving under the involving death. She was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center.
