Lexington County cuts ribbon on Solid Waste Transfer Station

Lexington County officials celebrated the opening of the Lexington County Solid Waste Transfer Station Expansion with a ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony Thursday morning.

The expanded facility, which is located at 498 Landfill Lane in the Edmund Community, will serve the disposal needs of the County’s residents and commercial businesses well into the future.

“As the County continues to grow, so does the demand for solid waste collection and disposal services,” Council Chairman Scott Whetstone said. “This facility will provide the needed waste disposal capacity for our residents and businesses for at least the next 20 years, and we are very excited for this project’s completion.”

The facility was designed and constructed over a 2 year period at a total cost of $5.6 million. It was constructed to provide additional capacity for the efficient processing and transportation of residential and commercial waste.  Waste is transported from the facility in tractor trailers to final disposal at the Waste Management Landfill located in Richland County.

The 17,560-square-foot building includes 5 vehicle bays and a large tipping hall for collection vehicle dumping, and hydraulic cranes used to pack the waste into tractor trailer trucks for cost effective transportation to the landfill.

“This facility will provide the waste handling capacity required to process expected increases in waste generated through growth in the County for the next 20 years,” Director of Solid Waste Management David Eger said. “This facility will positively impact our ability to successfully manage growth in residential and commercial waste in the County.”
