Lexington County Councilman Ned Tolar suffers serious injury in car wreck

Lexington County Councilman Ned Tolar is slowly recovering after being in an accident two weeks ago.

The crash occurred when Tolar was turning left at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Old Cherokee  Road in Lexington. His car was hit on the driver’s side by another vehicle.

Tolar suffered three broken vertebra and damage to one of his kidneys. He had a cut that peeled back his scalp that took nine stitches to close, said his wife, Vicki Tolar. She said her husband had extensive bruising on his body, too.

“He had a whole trauma team working on him, she said.

“I’m thankful,” said Tolar, who was released from the hospital last Saturday after 10 days, to his West Columbia home. Tolar, who represents Council District 8, also expressed appreciation for the job the medical professionals have done to help him.  “I’m thankful for my doctors, and I’m thankful to be alive,” he said.

Tolar’s wife said his recovery is going to be a slow process.

“He’s gone through a lot” Vicki Tolar said. She also said her husband had lost his appetite due to the injuries.

Tolar will undergo rehabilitation at home, but he will be doing more than just resting.

“Ned is a fighter and he will be back,” Vicki Tolar said.

Todd Cullum, Lexington County Council Chairman, said all of council, and everyone associated with the county, are praying for Tolar’s recovery and comfort.

“We’ll glad to get him back at 100 percent,” Cullum said.

Vicki Tolar  said the collision would have been even more threatening if it the hit would have been six inches more toward the front of his car door. His car was a total loss.

Vicki Tolar said Tolar was never unconscious during the wreck, but he was immobilized in the car by the crash.

“There was gasoline all over the road, “said Vicki Tolar. “And a man pulled Ned out of the car. He does not know who pulled him out, but he’d like to find him and thank him.”
