Lexington County Council voted, Tuesday, not to implement a proposed $30 vehicle registration fee. The money generated from the fee would have been used for road improvements.

A vast majority of country residents speaking at a public hearing, before the vote, were against the added fee. The vote not to impose the fee at this time, was unanimous.

In 2022, Lexington County voters rejected a penny tax (one percent sales tax) for road improvements. But the penny tax is likely to be promoted again because of the need for a funding source to improve roads in the county.

The $30 vehicle fee was estimated to have generated $8 million a year. A countywide penny tax would add $500 million over eight years of the penny tax. Below: Evening traffic on Sunset Boulevard in West Columbia, heading toward Lexington.
