Lexington County closes West Columbia road, and 3 others

The rain began falling Thursday night, and has not stopped. Creeks are beginning to run high, and flash flood warnings are being issued by the National Weather Service.  Lexington County is closing some roads. The county issued the release below after 3 p.m., Friday. The City of West Columbia also reported  Cofield Drive and Terrace View Drive have been closed. 

COUNTY OF LEXINGTON ANNOUNCES ROAD CLOSURES DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER

The County of Lexington Department of Public Safety announces several road closures throughout the County related to recent inclement weather generated by Tropical Storm Hermine and has moved into a partial activation of the County’s Emergency Operations Center.

The following County-maintained roads are closed at this time due to standing water on the roadway:

·         Sweet Pea Lane, from Mack Street to Gus Sturkie Road in Gaston

·         Kleckley Road, from Klapman Road to Sunset Boulevard in West Columbia

·         1100 block of Jones Wire Road in Swansea

·         Railroad Avenue, from Freedom Road to Burton Road in Lexington

The County is in contact with the South Carolina Emergency Management Division, local municipalities and local school districts to ensure the safety of the County’s residents. We ask that residents stay indoors and off of the roadways if possible.

Lexington County officials will continue to monitor all weather conditions and roadways throughout Friday afternoon and into the evening. Officials are paying close attention to all low-lying areas and flood-prone neighborhoods, especially those that experienced flooding during the October Rain Event.
