Lee Street in Cayce to be repaved and renamed for “Skip” Jenkins and Eddie Brown

A plan to resurface Lee Street in Cayce was approved by the Lexington County Council, Tuesday.

Lee Street is in District 2 represented by Byron Thomas on Cayce City Council. “The repaving of Lee Street is a milestone,” Thomas said. “It is the result of a strong collaborative effort between the City of Cayce, the SCDOT, and Lexington County.”

A name change is also in the works for the street. Cayce Mayor Elise Partin thanked Ivan Earle for his effort to rename Lee Street after the Hon. Cayce City Councilman James “Skip” Jenkins, Cayce’s longest serving Council Member and Eddie Brown, Cayce’s first African American Police Officer and Firefighter, now deceased.

“Ivan Earle has worked hard on the name change for a long time,” Partin said. “He took the idea to the Cayce Planning Commission and worked with the city’s staff. The road is getting repaved and named after two great people.”

Myra Brown, Eddie’s daughter, lives on Lee Street, currently, in the house her father built. She said her father was a Police officer for almost 30 years. His brother, Cozie Brown, was also a firefighter and police officer.

“To name the street after my father is such an honor,” Myra said. “And I’m pleased with the plan to repave the street, too.”

Partin said the process to change the name is ongoing and the new name will be Skip Jenkins and Eddie Brown Street. A ceremony is planned to commemorate the name change and to honor Jenkins and Brown when the name is changed.

Thomas said Jenkins and Brown are two distinguished individuals who “have made lasting, and meaningful contributions to our community.” He also thanked SCDOT Commissioner Bill Dukes, Lexington County Chairman Todd Cullum, Public Works Chairman Councilman Darrell Hudson, and Councilman Todd Cockrell for their support and partnership in moving the project forward.
