In Observance of Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week – An Editorial by Tori Seymour, Project Director, 21st Century Program, Brookland-Lakeview Empowerment Center
Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week (April 20–24, 2026) is a time to recognize those of us who extend learning beyond the classroom. I am proud to be part of this important work.

As an educator, program director, and leader, my work does not end when the school bell rings. Through my leadership with the 21st Century After School Program at Brookland-Lakeview Empowerment Center (BLEC), I am committed to creating spaces where students feel supported, challenged, and inspired. Afterschool is where relationships deepen, confidence grows, and real- world connections to learning take place
My passion lies in helping students build not only academic skills, but also self-belief. Whether I am leading enrichment activities, supporting academic achievement, or mentoring students through everyday challenges, I strive to make every interaction meaningful. I believe that exposure, consistency, and care are key ingredients in shaping student success.
Afterschool programs are more than supervision—they are opportunities. They give students the chance to discover their strengths, explore new interests, and receive individualized support they may not always get during the school day. As a leader in this space, I take pride in designing programs that are structured, engaging, and impactful for every child we serve.
This week, I celebrate not only my work, but the collective efforts of afterschool professionals everywhere who show up daily with dedication and heart. Together, we are building futures—one student, one lesson, and one experience at a time.
