Helms, who also played at Clemson, came into the game with his team trailing 14-7 after three quarters. He immediately led a nine-play scoring drive of 80 yards, that ended with an 11-yard touchdown run by Rhode Island running back Malik Grant.
After Long Island scored another TD to go up 21-14, Helms put together another drive capped with him scoring on a 4-yard touchdown run.
Rhode Island took the lead for good on another running TD. Helms finished 7-10 passing for 90 yards.
