Gray falls just short in quest for State Championship in high school soccer

Oceanside Collegiate Academy defeated Gray Collegiate Academy, 2-0, in the 2A State Championship high school soccer final, Saturday. The game was played at Irmo High School.

Gray Coach Kevin Heise described nationally-ranked Oceanside as powerful.

“They are arguably the best soccer team of all classifications in South Carolina,” Heise said. “We knew we had to play an A-plus game today and that just wasn’t going to be in the cards.”

Gray and Heise also made it to the State Championship in 2022, losing to Christ Church 2-0.

Heise has won more than 500 high school soccer games and he’s been to the state championship game five times. He started six sophomores Saturday. He said he is optimistic about the future.

“We’re building a program. It’s a program we’re proud of,” he said, and he’s already look forward to next year.
