Gray Collegiate Academy welcomes Katie Nunnery to lead the War Eagle Cheer team

Gray Collegiate Academy is excited to welcome Katie Nunnery, a three-time state championship cheer coach, to lead the War Eagle Cheer team.

Nunnery, an Irmo native, attended Dutch Fork High School and graduated in 1998. She was a cheer captain in her senior year and then became a Universal Cheerleaders Association coach. Before joining Gray, she coached at her alma mater from 2003 to 2019.

Katie has established herself as a successful cheerleading coach and mentor. She was the first coach in South Carolina to win both the 4A and 5A state championships.

From 2010 to 2013, she was the 4A State Runner-Up/Regional Champion. In 2014, she guided her team to the 4A Region and State Championship. In 2016, she was named State Coach of the Year and won the 5A State Championship. In 2017, she was named National Sectional Coach of the Year, SCHSL Coach of the Year, and led her team to the 5A State Championship. Katie takes over a program that has won the past three State Championships.

Dr. Newsome, Principal at Gray, states, “We made a homerun hire with Coach Nunnery. She is a proven winner that has won multiple State Championships and we are confident she will be continuing that success at Gray. Throughout the vetting process, Katie’s name was continuously brought up as a wonderful candidate. We are fortunate to add someone of Katie’s caliber as our new head coach.”

Katie is married to Dr. Mike Nunnery, and they have twin boys, Greer and Garrison.
