Governor orders ‘nonessential’ businesses to close because of COVID-19

Gov. Henry McMaster issued an order Tuesday

Gov. Henry McMaster issued an order Tuesday, closing down all non-essential businesses in South Carolina due to the coronavirus.

The order applies to thousands of businesses across the state.

Businesses to be closed include gyms, spas, nightclubs, barber shops, hair salons, tattoo parlors, waxing salons, fitness centers, bowling alleys, arcades, racetracks, indoor children’s play areas, theaters, planetariums, museums and performing arts centers.

Dr. Linda Bell, a DHEC epidemiologist, said there were 158 new cases of the coronavirus since Monday.

The order does not apply to grocery stores, drug stores, pharmacies and other businesses deemed essential. Banks and gas stations will remain open too.

Take out orders from restaurants and window orders from fast food restaurants will still be allowed. Large retailers like WalMart and Target, will stay open.
