Gov. Henry McMaster is headed to a runoff in the GOP primary. The Associated Press called the race after 9 p.m. Tuesday.

With 99 percent of the state’s precincts reporting McMaster had 42% of the vote. In two weeks McMaster will go up against Greenville businessman John Warren who had 28% of the vote.

McMaster finished first in the Republican primary that included four other candidates, but he fell short of the 50-percent-plus one majority he needed to capture the GOP nomination outright.
Catherine Templeton was at 22%. Lt. Gov. Kevin Bryant had 7% and former Lt. Gov. Yancey McGill had 2%.

State Rep. James Smith was projected- with 99% of the precincts reporting- to win the Democratic Party’s nomination for governor in a landslide, with 62%. Smith is a Columbia attorney. He defeated Florence attorney Marguerite Willis who had 28% and Phil Noble who had 11%.
