George Washington crossed the Congaree River celebrated in Cayce’s Riverland Park as part of America’s 250th Birthday, Saturday

By Cayce City Councilman Byron Thomas – As cities across America look for ways to remember history and celebrate America’s 250th Birthday, we’re blessed to have an important Revolutionary War story right here in the City of Cayce.

At H. Kelley Jones Park, you’ll not only find a tubing takeout, playground, our Riverwalk trail, and the beautiful homes of the Riverland Park neighborhood.

But also the place where George Washington crossed the Congaree River to reach Columbia during his 1791 Southern Tour, shortly after Columbia became South Carolina’s new state capital.

Thank you so much to the Granby Chapter NSDAR and the Godfrey Dreher Chapter SCSSAR, in partnership with the SC American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission, for presenting the historical marker that will forever share the story of the Friday’s Ferry Skirmish that took place on May 15, 1781.

Thank you to the South Carolina 250 Commission and the Washington Light Infantry for the posting of colors.

A special thank you to our Cayce Historical Museum and all you do to help educate others and preserve the history of our city!

There’s so much history in our own backyard, and what a blessing it is to have this historical marker in District 2 and the City of Cayce! Byron Thomas Photos
