Former Gray Collegiate Quarterback Hunter Helms is back at Clemson where he’ll serve as a player/coach

Former Gray Collegiate Quarterback Hunter Helms is back at Clemson. The former Tiger QB will serve as a player/coach for the 2025 season.

At first Helms was going to join Clemson’s staff as a student coach, but now he will dress out, adding veteran depth to the Tigers’ roster. He will be available as an emergency quarterback, according to Todd Helms, Hunter’s father.

Helms played four seasons at Clemson from 2020 to 2023. He came as a preferred walk-on and earned a scholarship. In 2020, in a game versus Georgia Tech, Helms threw two TD passes as a true freshman. he played high school football at Gray Collegiate Academy in West Columbia. Helms was honored with a resolution by the West Columbia City Council in April.

He transferred to to Rhode Island in 2024 and guided the Rams to a CAA Championship.
At Clemson now, Cade Klubnik is the starter. Helms will be on scholarship. He will pursue a Master’s degree. Fall camp opens at Clemson July 31.
