“Firing on Columbia” reenactment is Saturday, road closed

Be prepared for some noise on Saturday.

Alexander Road, in West Columbia, will be closed on Saturday from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

Residents and visitors near the Gervais Street Bridge may hear the loud cannon blasts as a are part of the a reenactment of the “Firing on Columbia.” It’s known as “The Longest Day.” The Union Army of General William T. Sherman fired on Columbia in February of 1865 close to the end of the Civil War.

The reenactment will take place in front of the West Columbia Riverwalk Amphitheater on Saturday at noon. The cannon fire will last approximately 15 minutes.

The Columbia’s the 12th Annual Longest Day Event and it is sponsored by the Lt. General Wade Hampton Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Questions about the event can be directed to Don Gordon at 803-237-4409.
