Firing on Columbia commemorates “Longest Day” of 1865
To commemorate the Firing on Columbia of February 1865, a reenactment was held Saturday at the West
Columbia Riverwalk. Columbia was approached by the Union Army of Gen. William T. Sherman as the Civil War drew to a close. It is referred to as Columbia’s “Longest Day.” The city was later burned.
The firing this Saturday began at noon, and return fire came from across the Congaree River, where Confederate Troop reenactors were positioned on the banks of the river.
