Investigators with the Cayce Department of Public Safety announced Monday that a 60-year-old Lexington man has been charged with assault and battery in the third degree.

According to the Cayce DPS, Willie Louis Scott Jr. turned himself in Monday morning and was booked at the Lexington County Detention Center.

An investigation began in late February at Brookland-Cayce High School. The department noted that the victim in this case is an 18-year-old student. Scott is a Lexington District 2 employee, as a teacher’s assistant and assistant football coach.

Around 11 a.m. last Wednesday, the student was being addressed by another teacher for a violation of the dress code policy, according to the Cayce DPS. During the conversation, it is claimed Scott approached the student and placed his hands about the victim’s neck and shoulders. According to a statement, the victim’s airway was restricted and he briefly lost  consciousness. But the student returned to class shortly after the incident.

The school resource officer was notified of the incident by a school official, and an investigation began at that time. The department noted that officials with the district have fully cooperated with the investigation and continue to provide assistance as requested.

Scott’s next scheduled court appearance is March 19 at the Cayce Municipal Court.
