Eggroll Station in West Columbia is closing – Is redevelopment of Capitol Square getting closer to reality?
Eggroll Station at 135 Sunset Blvd. in West Columbia is closing.

Reports are that this Saturday, Dec. 20, is the last day Egg Roll Station will be open. The Chinese cuisine restaurant is famous for its egg rolls and its “Go Cocks Go E*Rolls” sign that was in front of the building for years, until it was taken down by a vehicle recently. Egg Roll Station has been open for 35 years.
The Egg Roll building was bought by Baker Commercial Properties in December of 2023. The Al’s Upstairs property was bought, too.
Baker Commercial Properties plans to redevelop Capitol Square on Sunset Boulevard at Meeting Street into a mixed-use complex consisting of multifamily residential units, retail, parking and public open spaces to enhance the Riverfront corridor along Meeting Street.
A redevelopment plan was presented to West Columbia City Council in October of 2024. Capitol Square, under the plan, will be designed as a centrally located gathering place to facilitate further growth and expansion of the River District, and West Columbia, using innovative design techniques and modern development approaches while honoring the existing architectural, cultural, and social context surrounding the site, Baker stated in its zoning proposal.
The plan includes a four-story 224-unit apartment complex with 18,000 sq-ft. of retail or office space, public parking, and a public open space fronting Meeting Street. Eventually, the plan is to include a 27,000 sq-ft. grocery store and an additional 4,800 sq-ft of retail outparcels.
A national grocer has been identified, according to the Baker proposal. As the property around the site is developed, local small business is expected to lease the retail/office space with casual or fine dining restaurants a possibility, along with specialty retail shops.
